No one noticed the waitress.

She moved quietly between tables, collecting empty glasses, her gray uniform blending into the background. To the guests, she was just another employee.

Then a voice cut through the music.

“Hey.”

Alex.

The billionaire everyone wanted to impress.

He wrapped an arm around the glamorous woman beside him and pointed directly at the waitress.

“I’ll make a deal,” he said with a grin. “If you can outdance her, I’ll call off my engagement and marry you tonight.”

The nearby tables erupted with laughter.

The woman in the silver gown smirked.

“That’s cruel, even for you.”

The waitress froze.

The tray nearly slipped from her hands.

For a moment, the entire ballroom felt impossibly far away.

The music.

The diamonds.

The people who had never known what it felt like to choose between rent and food.

Alex leaned back in his chair.

“What happened?” he asked. “Scared?”

The waitress slowly raised her eyes.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t angry.

And somehow that made his smile disappear.
