THE MIRROR NEVER BROKE

The old bedroom smelled of dust, rain, and fear. A single bedside lamp flickered softly against peeling wallpaper while a frightened mother held a heavy mallet in trembling hands. Her son buried his face into her side, crying uncontrollably as they stared at the towering wooden-framed mirror standing in the corner of the room. Something moved inside it, even though nothing stood behind them.
The mother tried convincing herself it was stress or exhaustion. Her breathing became uneven as the boy continued shaking violently in plaid pajamas. He pointed toward the reflection with pale trembling fingers. Deep inside the mirror’s darkness stood a tall shadowy figure that seemed taller than the room itself, unmoving yet somehow alive.
The child whispered the words that froze the room completely. “Mom… there’s something behind the mirror.” His voice cracked with terror. The lamp dimmed slightly as though the room itself reacted to the sentence. The mother tightened her grip around the mallet, refusing to look away from the reflection watching them silently.
A cold silence swallowed the bedroom. The mother’s eyes filled with tears while sweat rolled down her face. Every instinct told her to run, but her son could barely stand from fear. The shadow inside the mirror slowly tilted its head unnaturally, almost studying them. That movement shattered the last piece of courage holding her together.
The mother stepped forward cautiously. The reflection copied her movements half a second too late. Her heart pounded violently in her chest while the child cried behind her. Suddenly the figure inside the mirror moved closer without taking a step, gliding through the darkness toward the glass with horrifying slowness.
The woman gasped sharply and spun around with a scream fueled entirely by panic. Raising the heavy mallet high above her head, she swung it directly into the center of the mirror. The impact exploded through the room like a gunshot. Glass shattered violently outward while countless razor-sharp fragments scattered across the floor.
Her son screamed and covered his face as shards rained around them. The mother stumbled backward, panting heavily with both hands shaking uncontrollably. Dust drifted slowly through the warm lamp light while the destroyed frame stood crooked against the wall. Silence returned almost immediately, making the destruction feel even more unnatural.
For several seconds neither of them moved. The woman expected to see the plain bedroom wall behind the mirror’s frame. Instead, beyond the shattered glass remained the same dark reflection of their room. The mirror still existed somehow, untouched by reality. Their reflections stood frozen inside the darkness, staring back without blinking.
The child slowly looked upward through tears. The reflection of his mother inside the broken mirror began breathing differently from the real woman beside him. The reflected version smiled faintly while the real mother remained horrified. A deep metallic creaking sound echoed from somewhere beyond the cracked darkness hidden inside the frame.
The mother backed away carefully while holding her son close. Every broken shard still reflected the shadow figure from different angles around the room. No matter where she stood, she could feel unseen eyes following them. The air became colder with every passing second, and the bedside lamp flickered faster as if warning them to escape immediately.
A low growl vibrated through the shattered frame. It sounded deep, wet, and inhuman, like something buried underground finally waking up. The mother froze completely while the child sobbed quietly behind her. Tiny fragments of glass near the mirror began trembling across the wooden floor as the growl became louder.
The camera of terror seemed to pull closer toward the ruined frame. Jagged glass edges glimmered beneath the warm lamp light. Beyond the cracks there was no visible wall, only endless darkness stretching far deeper than the room should physically allow. Something shifted slowly within that impossible void.
Then it appeared. A pale hand emerged carefully from inside the mirror. Its skin looked unnaturally white and stretched tightly over long bony fingers. Black liquid dripped slowly from its nails while it gripped the broken edge of the frame. The sound of cracking bones echoed softly through the bedroom.
The mother tried dragging her son toward the bedroom door, but the handle would not move. The room itself felt trapped inside the mirror’s nightmare. Behind them, the pale hand tightened its grip and another hand slowly reached outward from the darkness. The reflection inside the mirror no longer matched the room around them.
Their reflections now stood still while the real mother and son moved in panic. The reflected child slowly turned his head toward the shadow figure standing behind him. The reflected mother smiled wider unnaturally, her eyes completely black inside the mirror world. Something terrible was preparing to cross over completely.
The growling intensified until the walls themselves seemed to vibrate. The bedside lamp burst suddenly, plunging half the room into darkness. Only moonlight from the window illuminated the shattered mirror where the creature continued crawling outward inch by inch. Its movements were slow, deliberate, and horrifyingly patient.
The child screamed louder than before as one long finger touched the wooden floor outside the mirror. The mother raised the mallet again despite her shaking arms. Tears streamed down her face while she prepared herself for a fight no human could possibly survive. The creature’s breathing sounded wet and hungry.
Every shard on the floor reflected distorted images of the creature emerging. Some reflections showed it already standing fully inside the room while others showed empty darkness. Reality itself seemed fractured around the mirror. The mother realized with growing horror that breaking the glass had never destroyed the thing trapped inside.
Instead, the shattered mirror had opened it.
The creature slowly lifted its head from the darkness, revealing hollow eyes and a twisted grin stretched impossibly wide across its pale face. The room filled with a suffocating pressure as though the entire house feared what was happening. The child buried his face into his mother’s back, unable to look anymore.
Then the reflection inside the broken mirror whispered softly before the screen faded to black.
“You should never have let me out.”
