🥀🥀 SAD NEWS: 49ers fans are drowning in grief following the permanent loss of a legendary quarterback — A man who devoted 17 years of his career, his heart, and his youth to San Francisco. abc

San Francisco, California – The San Francisco 49ers community is united in grief following the passing of John Brodie, who died at the age of 90. His loss is not only the passing of a man, but the closing of a defining chapter in the franchise’s history — the era that laid the foundation for 49ers football long before the Super Bowl years.

Before names like Joe Montana and Steve Young became synonymous with greatness, John Brodie carried the hopes of the organization through its most challenging seasons. Selected by the 49ers with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1957 NFL Draft, Brodie spent his entire 17 year career in San Francisco — a rare display of loyalty in any era of the league.

On the field, he was the embodiment of toughness and precision. Brodie threw for more than 31,000 passing yards, delivered 214 touchdown passes, and reached the pinnacle of the sport when he was named NFL MVP in 1970. At a time when quarterback play was far more punishing and offensive systems far less forgiving, he stood among the very best. His two Pro Bowl selections and one All-Pro honor reflect his elite status, even though the 49ers of that era never enjoyed the postseason success of later generations.

Yet Brodie’s true value transcended statistics. He represented resilience — a quiet leader who played for the jersey and the city, often without the spotlight or rewards that would later define the franchise. For longtime fans, John Brodie is the reason their connection to the 49ers began.

After retiring from football, Brodie remained close to the game as a television broadcaster and later proved his competitive spirit once again by carving out a successful run on the Senior PGA Tour. No matter the arena, his dedication and professionalism never wavered.

Despite being nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame numerous times, Brodie was never inducted — a reflection more of the era he played in than of his impact on the game. His legacy has never depended on a plaque.

A legend has passed.
But for 49ers Nation, John Brodie’s legacy will live on forever.
