I thought a crying little girl was trying to sell me her pink bicycle for food — until one of the four men behind me suddenly went pale and whispered, “Sir… that’s the missing heir.” I had come to that street in my gray overcoat for work, not for heartbreak. The rain had just stopped. The sidewalk was still wet. And in the middle of all that gray, there she was — a tiny girl in a red polka-dot dress, shaking beside a little pink bicycle with a cardboard sign tied to the front: FOR SALE. Her cheeks were wet with tears. There was a scratch on her face. Her hands were trembling so badly the bike rattled every time she tried to hold it still. “Excuse me, sir,” she cried. “Would you buy my bike?” I bent down a little. “What are you doing out here alone?” She swallowed hard, trying to be brave. “Please,” she said. “Mommy hasn’t eaten in days. I can’t sell anything else from the house, so I’m selling my bike.” Something in my chest tightened. I glanced back for a second. The four men in dark suits who had come with me were standing near the store entrance, watching in silence. I turned back to the girl. “How long since your mother last ate?” I asked quietly. Her lip shook. “Three days. She keeps saying we have to save everything for the rent… but there’s nothing left.” Then she looked at my coat. Really looked at it. And her whole expression changed. “You’re the man in gray,” she whispered. I frowned. “What?” She reached into the little basket on the front of the bike and pulled out a sealed envelope, wrinkled and slightly damp. “Mommy said,” the girl whispered, “if a man in a gray coat ever came with men in suits… only give this to him.” My hands went cold before I even opened it. Inside was an old photograph. A much younger woman stood in front of this same little store, smiling, holding a baby wrapped in a pink blanket. And next to her… was the man whose estate I had spent the last six months trying to untangle. Victor Hale. The billionaire who had died two months ago. The same man who had left behind one unfinished note in his will: Find my granddaughter before my son does. My throat closed. I looked back down at the girl. “What’s your mother’s name?” She wiped her face with the back of her hand and said softly: “Emily Hale.” Behind me, one of the men in suits grabbed my arm and whispered: “She was declared dead eight years ago.” The girl stared at me, terrified, and added one last sentence: “Mommy said if you found us too late… I should tell you the key is taped under the seat.” Part 2 in the first comment.
