The Green Bay Packers are used to outside noise, but this week the criticism hit a different level. After Jordan Love briefly left the Week 11 win over the New York Giants to get his shoulder evaluated, a small but loud group of fans on social media claimed the Packers offense “looked better with the backup.” Some even went as far as mocking Love by saying Malik Willis — the team’s No. 2 quarterback — should be the starter.
On Tuesday morning, Willis had heard enough. And he didn’t hold back.
Speaking in the locker room before practice, the 26-year-old backup delivered one of the strongest public defenses of a starting quarterback Green Bay has seen in years.
“Let me say this clearly,” Willis said. “If you think I’m better than Jordan Love, you don’t understand football. That man is the leader of this team. He’s the one carrying us every week. I’m here to support him, not compete with fake narratives.”
Willis, who came in for one drive against the Giants and helped lead a touchdown march, insisted that his brief appearance “means nothing compared to the full picture.”
“People don’t realize how tough he is,” Willis continued. “He came back in that game playing through pain most guys would sit out with. That’s not something you see on highlights, but we see it every day.”
Several veterans privately expressed appreciation for Willis’ words, noting that backup quarterbacks rarely speak this directly in public. One lineman told reporters off record: “He said what the locker room wanted to say.”
Jordan Love himself avoided the drama, smiling when asked about Willis’ comments.
“Malik is my guy,” Love said. “He’s a true pro. We lift each other up. That’s what this room is about.”
Head coach Matt LaFleur praised both quarterbacks for their professionalism.
“They handle things the right way,” LaFleur said. “Jordan is our guy. Malik has been phenomenal in his role. There’s no controversy in this building.”
Still, the outside noise didn’t stop trending. Clips of Willis’ comments spread quickly across the NFL world, with many praising his maturity. One analyst wrote on X:

For Willis, the message was simple — and delivered with conviction.
“Jordan doesn’t need me to defend him,” he said. “But sometimes the truth needs to be said out loud. He’s our quarterback. He’s the heartbeat of this team. Anyone laughing at him hasn’t watched what he does for us every single day.”
As the Packers prepare for crucial divisional matchups, the locker room appears more united than ever — thanks, in part, to the backup quarterback who refused to let his leader be disrespected.
