Jimmy Kimmel Delivers Sharp Jabs at Oscars While Presenting Documentary Awards

Jimmy Kimmel did not host the 2026 Oscars, a role held for the second year by Conan O’Brien. As a presenter for the documentary categories, however, he still captured attention with his characteristic humor and pointed remarks during Sunday’s ceremony at the Dolby Theatre.

Kimmel began his segment with a light-hearted joke about O’Brien, claiming the host had “accidentally exposed his face to the sun and was incinerated.” He added that he would now finish the rest of the program, prompting laughter from the celebrity-filled audience.

He then shifted to a serious note, praising the courage of documentary filmmakers. Kimmel stressed that sharing stories that could cost one’s life truly embodies bravery, particularly in places where truth carries dangerous risks.

Kimmel followed with a bold comment on free speech limitations, noting that some leaders do not support it. He quipped, “I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea and CBS,” directly targeting the network.

The remark referenced CBS’s recent choice to prevent Texas State Representative James Talarico from appearing on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” amid FCC pressure. It also recalled an earlier canceled “60 Minutes” segment that had been heavily promoted.

Kimmel has personal experience with free speech issues. Last fall, he was temporarily pulled from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after criticism from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, leading to Disney’s decision that galvanized supporters of open media expression.

Returning to documentaries, Kimmel commended the international filmmakers who risk everything to reveal injustice and motivate change. He highlighted their commitment before inserting a subtle critique of Amazon MGM’s “Melania” documentary.

He described the film as one “where you walk around the White House trying on shoes,” poking fun at a scene featuring Melania Trump trying footwear. The line drew amused reactions from the crowd familiar with the project.

When presenting the Outstanding Documentary Feature award, Kimmel landed another jab. He remarked, “Oh man, is he going to be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this,” clearly referring to former President Donald Trump.

“All the Empty Rooms,” directed by Joshua Seftel and Conall Jones, won Documentary Short. “Mr Nobody Against Putin,” directed by David Borenstein, Helle Faber, Alžběta Karásková, Radovan Síbrt, and Lucie Kon, took Documentary Feature. Kimmel’s comments fueled ongoing online conversation.
