He Was Forced To Replace The Rich Son To Marry The Coma Heiress… But When She Woke Up, They Found Out Who He Really Was
PART 1
When Diego Navarro heard that the powerful Elizondo family planned to marry him to a vegetative woman, he thought it was a cruel joke. He was in the service yard of the huge mansion in San Pedro Garza Garcia, cleaning the grease off his hands after repairing the patron’s van, when Don Roberto Elizondo called him to the main office. His mother, Mrs. Carmen, had worked for that family for 25 years. He’d polished his marble floors, cooked his banquets and silently endured humiliation because salary barely covered his dialysis treatments. Diego had grown up in the service room like a ghost: useful for heavy work, invisible when visiting.
-Muchacho – said Don Roberto, giving a drink to his glass of tequila -, it’s time for you to pay for everything this family has done for you and your mother.
Sitting in a leather armchair was Mauricio, the legitimate son of the Elizondos, checking his cell phone with obvious annoyance. Beside him, his mother, Ms. Leonor, looked at Diego with contempt from the insect watchers.
– The patriarch of the De la Garza family is looking for a husband for his granddaughter – Roberto explained, nailing his cold gaze on the young man -. Valeria De la Garza has been in a coma for 2 years after an accident. Her grandfather, desperate, brought a healer from Catemacus who assured him that the young woman would wake up if she married a man born exactly on October 14 at 3 pm. Mauritius was born at this exact moment. But you will understand that my son is not going to ruin his future by tying himself to a vegetable.
Diego felt a lump in his stomach.
– Then they want me to go in their place.
– You were born on the same day and at the same time as Mauricio, in the social insurance clinic – Leonor intervened with a sharp voice -. No one will notice the difference if you wear one of their suits.
—I can’t do that, it’s a crime. It’s an unforgivable deceit — Diego replied, taking a step back.
Mauricio unleashed a mocking laugh.
—Do I cheat? you should kiss the ground we walk on You will go from being the son of the maid to living in Monterrey’s most luxurious residence.
Diego thought of his mother, who at that time was in the kitchen, with his pale face and trembling hands.
—My mom needs me. I won’t leave her alone in this place — Diego firmly said.
Don Roberto’s smile was erased immediately, revealing his true nature.
—Your mother is very sick, Diego. It would be a real shame if tomorrow itself we throw her out on the street and cancel her health insurance that pays for her dialysis. He has only a few months left without that treatment.
The silence in the room was absolute. They weren’t offering him a deal; they were putting a gun in his head.
That very night, Diego packed his few belongings into a backpack. He hugged his mother, promising her that everything would be temporary and that he would find a way to get her out of that house. Hours later, an armored car left him in front of the imposing De la Garza residence. Don Eugenio, Valeria’s grandfather, received him with a tired but hopeful look.
“From today on, you are part of my blood,” the old man said, hugging him. I will not call you son-in-law, I will call you grandson.
The guilt almost crushed Diego. When they took him to Valeria’s room, the impact left him breathless. She lay between sheets of silk, connected to 3 machines that marked the beat of her heart. She was beautiful, with a face so serene that she seemed to be immersed in a deep sleep.
For the next 15 days, Diego slept in a recliner by the window. He never dared to touch it without permission. I’d open the curtains for her to feel the morning sun, play music and talk to her for hours. He was telling him how he missed the tacos on the corner of his neighborhood, and how, in his spare time, he drew plans of ecological houses dreaming of being a great architect.
– I don’t know who you were before this – Diego whispered to her one night, making the blanket comfortable -, but I swear that as long as I’m here, no one will treat you like a piece of furniture.
Right at that moment, the door of the room suddenly opened. It was Mauricio Elizondo, who had entered the house bribing the guards. She wore a syringe in her hand and a gruesome smile on her face.
-I’m tired of waiting, Diego – Mauricio whispered, approaching the bed -. My dad needs this dumbass to die tonight so you inherit the shares and pass them to us. Hold her tight.
Diego violently intervened, but at that very moment, the heart monitor began to beat with a deafening force, and Valeria’s fingers desperately clung to the sheet.
It was impossible to believe the nightmare that was about to unfold…
