The rumors are getting harder to ignore.

One of the worst pieces of news the San Francisco 49ers — and the rest of the NFC West — received this offseason was the Los Angeles Rams pulling off a blockbuster trade for reigning Defensive Player of the Year and edge rusher Myles Garrett. The move instantly elevated an already formidable Rams defense to an even more terrifying level.
And things may be about to get significantly worse for San Francisco.
Not long after the Garrett acquisition made headlines, rumors began swirling that perennial All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald is seriously considering coming out of retirement. If the reports hold true, the Rams could soon boast one of the most lethal defensive fronts in recent NFL history.
Donald, a 10-time Pro Bowler, walked away from the game after the 2023 season. Now 35, he remains a physical marvel with remarkably few lingering questions about his health or conditioning. Getting back into football shape would likely take him very little time.
While nothing has been made official, the rumor mill has only intensified in recent days. On Monday’s episode of ESPN’s NFL Live, insider Adam Schefter added considerable fuel to the fire, suggesting the possibility is gaining real traction.
“The idea here is Donald himself has floated that he could potentially return to Los Angeles,” Schefter said. “He’s thinking about it. Training camp is getting closer next month. They’d have to come up with a plan for him to bring him back. But where else right now would Aaron Donald be more wanted, more celebrated, more respected than in the Rams locker room, where Myles Garrett is already waiting for him? Again, no decision from Aaron Donald and we’ll see whether the two sides can get it done, but there seems to be a lot of momentum to the idea that this is certainly possible.”
The implications for the 49ers are chilling.
For years, Donald routinely terrorized San Francisco’s offensive line twice a season in the NFC West rivalry, disrupting plays, collapsing pockets, and making life miserable for quarterbacks and running backs alike. Pairing him with Garrett on the same defensive line would create a nightmare matchup that few teams in the league — including a 49ers squad already dealing with its own challenges — would be equipped to handle.
The budding arms race within the division shows no signs of slowing down. A Donald return would push the Rams even further ahead in the pecking order, forcing the rest of the NFC West to recalibrate their entire approach to facing Los Angeles.
For now, the 49ers can only hope that Donald ultimately decides to stay retired. Dealing with Myles Garrett twice a year is already a daunting enough proposition. Adding Aaron Donald back into the mix would turn those matchups into something approaching a horror show.
As training camp approaches, all eyes remain on Southern California. If Schefter’s sources are correct and momentum continues to build, the 49ers’ offseason headaches could soon become regular-season disasters.
