Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott delivered one of his strongest public criticisms of NFL officiating following Thursday night’s 44–30 loss to the Detroit Lions, a game overshadowed by what many around the league immediately labeled one of the season’s worst calls. With the Cowboys threatening late in the fourth quarter, Prescott connected with tight end Jake Ferguson on a key route before the play was halted by an Offensive Pass Interference penalty that stalled Dallas’ most promising scoring opportunity of the night.
Replays showed Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone initiating contact on the route, while Ferguson appeared to run a standard release without creating separation illegally. The call stunned players, coaches, commentators, and fans, leading to widespread backlash across social media and renewed debate over the league’s officiating standards. Prescott, speaking postgame, did not hide his frustration. “Am I going to get fined for this? I’m sorry, but that was terrible,” he said. “I looked at it again. I tried to see it from their angle. The official told me Ferguson was too aggressive on the release. I’ve never seen a call like that.”
Prescott went further, questioning the accountability of officiating crews in games with playoff implications. Team sources indicated that the Cowboys believed the call fundamentally altered their late-game strategy, forcing them out of an aggressive scoring approach and eliminating any realistic chance at a comeback. The loss dropped Dallas to 6–6–1 and tightened the margin for error in the NFC playoff race. Compounding the issues, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb exited with a concussion, removing one of Prescott’s top weapons during key series in the second half. The NFL has yet to issue an official statement on the officiating crew’s performance, though the play is expected to be part of the league’s internal review process. Prescott stood behind his remarks, emphasizing that players and teams should expect officiating consistency in critical moments. “We put ourselves in position to win,” Prescott said. “Calls like that can’t happen—not in games that matter this much.”
