STEPHEN COLBERT LEFT CBS — THEN BUILT A NEW AUDIENCE IN DAYS AS HIS SURPRISE YOUTUBE LAUNCH IGNITES FRESH DEBATE

Stephen Colbert: Late Night departure leaves TV in dark

Less than a week after saying goodbye to The Late Show, Stephen Colbert is already proving that leaving network television does not mean disappearing from the spotlight.

The former CBS host quietly launched a brand-new YouTube channel over the weekend, and the response was immediate.

Within days, the channel attracted more than 120,000 subscribers despite featuring just a single upload: a surprise appearance on the Michigan public-access program Only in Monroe.

For many fans, the rapid growth raised an obvious question:

Did Colbert really lose his audience—or did his audience simply follow him somewhere else?

A SURPRISE RETURN AFTER THE FAREWELL

Why 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Is Over

Colbert’s final episode of The Late Show aired only days earlier, closing an 11-year run that included more than 1,800 episodes and established him as one of the most influential figures in late-night television.

Rather than launching a major streaming project or signing with another network, Colbert chose an unexpectedly modest comeback.

His first YouTube upload featured him hosting Only in Monroe, a local public-access show based in Monroe, Michigan—a city of roughly 20,000 residents that holds special significance in Colbert’s television history.

The comedian famously appeared on the same program in 2015 just before debuting as host of The Late Show.

Now, after leaving CBS, he returned to where the journey began.

THE JOKE THAT IMMEDIATELY WENT VIRAL

Early in the broadcast, Colbert acknowledged the unusual circumstances with a joke that quickly spread across social media.

“It’s been an excruciating 23 hours without being on television,” he quipped before adding that he was grateful to appear on Monroe Community Media “before they also get acquired by Paramount.”

The line drew laughter from viewers but also reignited discussion about the controversy surrounding the end of The Late Show.

For months, fans and industry observers have debated whether Colbert’s departure was purely a business decision or connected to broader corporate and political pressures surrounding Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media.

THE CONTROVERSY REFUSES TO GO AWAY

The cancellation of The Late Show became one of television’s most discussed stories after Paramount sought regulatory approval for its merger while simultaneously settling a lawsuit brought by Donald Trump against CBS News.

Colbert publicly criticized Paramount’s decision to settle the case, famously describing the agreement as a “big fat bribe” during a monologue that generated headlines nationwide.

His remarks intensified speculation that tensions between the host and the company had reached a breaking point.

Although CBS repeatedly insisted that ending The Late Show was a financial decision, many viewers remained skeptical.

Now Colbert’s rapid online success is fueling a fresh round of debate about whether the audience truly wanted the show to end.

THE COPYRIGHT BATTLE THAT BACKFIRED

The controversy only grew when clips from Colbert’s Only in Monroe appearance began circulating across YouTube and social media.

CBS Studios responded by issuing copyright takedown notices against several unauthorized uploads, triggering immediate backlash from fans who accused the company of trying to suppress interest in Colbert’s post-CBS career.

The criticism spread quickly.

Within days, CBS reversed course.

The network clarified that the episode had been financed and produced by CBS Studios and officially published through partnerships involving Colbert’s new channel, Monroe Community Media, and The Late Show‘s digital platforms.

The company later announced it would temporarily suspend further enforcement actions while conducting an additional review.

A NEW CHAPTER IS ALREADY UNDERWAY

Whether Colbert intends to build a major digital media platform remains unclear.

At the moment, his channel contains just one video.

Yet that single upload has already generated enormous attention, attracted thousands of subscribers, and reignited conversations about his future.

For many fans, the most surprising part isn’t that Colbert launched a YouTube channel.

It’s that less than a week after leaving one of television’s biggest stages, he already appears to have found another audience waiting for him.

And if the early numbers are any indication, Stephen Colbert’s next chapter may be starting much sooner than anyone expected.
