Tom Brady has analyzed and identified three skill-position trade targets for the Chiefs that wouldn’t cost Brett Veach much ahead of the upcoming game…-kiki

Chicago Bears v Kansas City Chiefs - NFL Preseason 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-3 after five weeks of the NFL season but hope is certainly not lost with this team, especially with the trade deadline coming up. What kind of magic will Brett Veach cook up ahead of the deadline?

If the Chiefs look to upgrade on the offensive side of the ball, running back for sure needs to be a point of emphasis. We all knew the running back situation wasn’t great but Veach opted to stand pat with what the team had. Now that we know even more that the rushing attack isn’t ferocious whatsoever, will Veach add some help there?

While the wide receiver position should be improving, there’s room for depth there as well. Will Veach maybe add a lower-tier receiver in case Xavier Worthy and/or Hollywood Brown can’t stay healthy?

Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone listed potential trade candidates and while picking through those, there are three that could make sense for Kansas City. These players wouldn’t cost the Chiefs much so it could be worth a late draft pick to see if there’s anything there.

Jaylen Wright

“Plenty of teams have already started struggling with bad running back injuries and plenty of teams are having their depth tested. The Dolphins shouldn’t have a problem recouping a pick for Wright, who has clearly fallen out of the rotation and out of favor,” Bedinger wrote.

The Dolphins don’t appear to be interested in trying to make it work with Jaylen Wright, as he has yet to suit up for a game this season despite being healthy. That makes the former fourth-rounder out of Tennessee expendable and if the Dolphins don’t want him, maybe the Chiefs would?

Kareem Hunt has been serviceable and we haven’t gotten to see much out of Brashard Smith but Wright could be an intriguing addition to the backfield. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and four touchdowns in 2023 with the Volunteers (and the year before that saw him find the end zone 10 times) so he can be a workhorse. Why not take a shot and see if there’s anything there?

Tyler Lockett

Chiefs fans know this name well, as Tyler Lockett’s father, Kevin, played for the Chiefs in the late 90s and early 00s. Lockett also played his college ball at Kansas State so Chiefs fans were definitely following him before he got to the NFL.

Bedinger didn’t list Lockett directly as a trade target but instead listed that the Titans as a whole will be sellers and Lockett could be a part of that fire sale. The long-time Seahawk joined the Titans in the offseason and has done next to nothing for them, catching just seven passes for 52 yards.

Some might wonder what good Lockett would be for the Chiefs and the answer is that he’d simply be a depth piece. If the Chiefs end up needing guys to step up due to injuries to their starters, Lockett could be a part of that. He’s not the same guy he was in his prime but he still tallied 600 yards last year despite people thinking he was washed.

Alvin Kamara

While Alvin Kamara actually being traded doesn’t seem all that likely, the Saints are clearly in a rebuild (whether or not they want to admit it) and Keandre Miller looks to be a good successor at running back. If Kamara were to be on the trade block, he’d be the most expensive to acquire out of the three listed here but him being 30 years old would impact the asking price for sure.

Despite being 30 years old, which is considered way over the hill for NFL running backs, Kamara is still a very good running back, racking up 283 rushing yards with a rushing touchdown through the first five games of the season. He had nearly 1,500 scrimmage yards last year for a not very good Saints team so he clearly still has enough in the tank.

It’d be awesome adding an impactful running back like Kamara to the Chiefs backfield but unfortunately, of all of the names here, he’s the least realistic option. Kamara himself has said that he doesn’t want to play anywhere else and, last I checked, Kansas City isn’t New Orleans. Still, Chiefs fans can dream of what Kamara could accomplish in this offense.
