PART 2: «The Boy Knew Something the Doctors Had Missed» – mycay

Emily stared at her own foot like it belonged to someone else.

Her father didn’t move.

The boy kept his hands lifted above the water, scared to touch her again.

“Emily,” her father whispered, “try.”

Her lips shook.

“I’m scared.”

The boy looked up at her.

His voice was tiny.

“Don’t be. Just push like you’re stepping on the moon.”

Emily let out a broken breath.

Then she pressed down.

Her foot trembled.

The water shook.

Her knee bent slightly.

Her father covered his mouth, eyes filling so fast he looked almost angry at his own tears.

Emily gasped.

“I felt it.”

The boy smiled through his dirt-smudged face.

“I told you.”

Her father slowly turned to him.

“How did you know?”

The boy looked down at the tub.

“My mom used to do this.”

“With who?”

The boy swallowed.

“With me.”

Emily’s father stared at his weak, thin legs.

The boy’s voice became softer.

“After the accident, I couldn’t walk right either. Mom said warm water makes frightened legs remember.”

The father’s face changed.

“What was your mother’s name?”

The boy hesitated.

“Clara.”

The man went still.

Emily saw it immediately.

“Dad?”

He stepped back like the name had hurt him.

Clara had been Emily’s nurse.

The only one who never gave up.

The woman he fired after she begged him not to stop Emily’s therapy.

The boy reached into his pocket with shaking fingers and pulled out a folded, dirty envelope.

“She told me to bring this if I ever saw the girl in the garden.”

Emily’s father took it.

His hands were trembling before he even opened it.

Inside was one note.

“Sir, Emily moved her toes the week you sent us away. Please don’t let grief make you bury a living miracle.”

The father’s knees weakened.

He looked at Emily.

Then at the boy.

Then back at the letter.

All the anger left his face, and what remained was worse.

Guilt.

“I stopped the therapy,” he whispered.

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“You told me there was no hope.”

He looked at her like he would have traded the mansion, the garden, everything, just to take back that sentence.

“I was trying to protect you from disappointment.”

The boy quietly touched the side of the tub.

“But she wasn’t disappointed.”

He looked up at Emily.

“She was waiting.”

Emily gripped her crutches.

Her breath came uneven.

Then, with water running down her ankle, she lifted one foot and placed it on the gravel outside the tub.

Her father reached for her.

But she shook her head through tears.

“No.”

The boy held his breath.

Emily pushed down.

Her leg trembled violently.

Her whole body shook.

Then she stood.

Only for one second.

But it was enough.

Her father broke completely, dropping to his knees in the gravel.

Emily cried harder, half laughing, half sobbing.

The boy looked at the water, smiling like he had just returned something that had been stolen.

Then Emily reached down, took his dirty hand, and whispered,

“You didn’t wash my feet.”

She squeezed his fingers.

“You woke them up.”
