The New England Patriots had just left Gillette Stadium with a resounding 33-15 victory over the New York Giants, but that joy was quickly overshadowed by a piece of information that made the entire team pause. Terrell Jennings – the young running back expected to fill the void left by Antonio Gibson after his ACL injury – had encountered a serious problem in the head area and had to leave the field early in the second half. That was the moment that made the Patriots locker room fall silent even though the score was far ahead.

Jennings started the game full of energy, opening with a 39-yard kickoff return and right after that contributing to creating the conditions for Marcus Jones to execute the explosive 94-yard punt return. However, just a few minutes later, he lay down on the field after a strong collision, was taken into the medical tent and went straight into the tunnel. According to the initial assessment of the medical staff, this is a worrisome head injury and very likely will cause him to miss playing time for a long period.

The absence of Jennings leaves the Patriots with only Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson at the running back position, a big challenge in the context of the team going deep into the playoff race. Jennings was originally an undrafted free agent from Florida A&M, had started the season in the practice squad before being promoted after Gibson’s injury. Losing both Gibson and Jennings in the same period creates no small amount of worry for the Patriots coaching staff.

Head coach Mike Vrabel, the person who always values discipline and roster depth, did not hide his disappointment when talking about this injury news. “This is something no one wants to see,” Vrabel shared after the game. “He has done everything the right way – trying hard, persevering, and always putting the team first. Losing him is a painful blow, but the most important thing right now is his health and that he recovers properly.”

Although the victory over the Giants helps the Patriots solidify their position in the playoff race, the loss of Jennings rings an alarm bell for the road ahead. New England still has depth, still has fighting spirit, but losing another important piece in the backfield may force Vrabel to adjust tactics immediately. For Jennings, the journey back may be long, but what he has shown proves he remains an important part in the future of the Patriots.
