It may be only a month into the new NFL campaign, but Kansas City’s offensive structure already reveals a major flaw. Their ground game lacks efficiency, exposing vulnerabilities despite the team’s consistently dominant aerial attack.
While the passing scheme remains prolific, the imbalance grows clearer each week. Patrick Mahomes still finds ways to extend plays, yet too much is being asked from him without reliable production in the rushing department.
The discussion has shifted toward potential external solutions. One name emerging as a realistic trade target is Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle, whose experience and versatility could help stabilize Kansas City’s faltering rotation.

“Dowdle is, at worst, a high-end backup and does have depth value for Carolina,” wrote analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, who recently linked Kansas City to the veteran as a trade destination.
Knox highlighted that Dowdle’s trade value may be as low as a conditional seventh-round pick in 2026. Considering his modest $1.2 million base salary, the move would be financially low-risk for Kansas City’s front office.
Production has dipped this year, with Dowdle averaging only 3.1 yards per touch through four games. Still, his 2024 campaign with Dallas was far more impressive, eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards alongside nearly 1,350 scrimmage yards.
Comparisons to the Chiefs’ current duo are not flattering. Kareem Hunt ranked last in breakaway rate last season, while Isiah Pacheco was near the bottom as well. Together, they have generated minimal explosive plays for Kansas City.
Jordan Foote, a Kansas City-based reporter for Heavy.com, notes that the Chiefs remain desperate for a spark. Whether Dowdle provides it or not, the franchise must decide before the trade deadline if patching the backfield is necessary.
