The New England Patriots have pledged to cover all medical expenses for one of the franchise’s most iconic offensive linemen, reaffirming their lifelong commitment to the men who helped shape the team’s proudest era.
Team owner Robert Kraft announced the decision in a heartfelt statement, paying tribute to a player whose grit, durability, and leadership defined the Patriots of the 1970s and 1980s.

“He built the foundation that others stood on,” Kraft said.
“He fought for this team every Sunday, and now it’s our turn to fight for him.
Once you’ve worn the red, white, and blue, you’re part of our family forever.”
That promise was made to John Hannah, the Hall of Fame guard who anchored the Patriots’ offensive line during their resurgence in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Known for his relentless motor, flawless technique, and unmatched toughness, Hannah was the driving force behind one of the most dominant offensive fronts in NFL history.
During his entire career with New England (1973–1985), Hannah earned nine Pro Bowl selections (1976, 1978–1985) and was named First-Team All-Pro seven times (1976, 1978–1985).
His dominance at left guard helped protect quarterbacks like Steve Grogan and opened running lanes that powered the team’s ground attack.
As a member of both the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team and the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team, Hannah’s consistency and leadership became the standard for playing offensive line in New England – tough, disciplined, and selfless.

Teammates described him as “the man who never took a snap off,” a warrior who thrived in the cold, physical battles that defined old-school football.
He was also awarded the NFL Players Association’s Offensive Lineman of the Year four straight years from 1978 through 1981.
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Patriots Hall of Fame, Hannah remains one of the most respected figures in franchise history.
His name stands alongside Patriots legends as a symbol of the team’s golden era – a time when hard work and heart carried the Patriots through every challenge.
As word of his illness spread, former teammates, fans, and coaches flooded social media with messages of gratitude and love.
For the people of New England, John Hannah isn’t just a Hall of Famer – he’s a reminder of what Patriots football truly stands for: loyalty, toughness, and family.
