Don Esteban never smiled again since the night he was told his daughter died. His wife lost her life in childbirth, and the family assured her that the baby didn’t survive either. Since then, the mansion became a cold place, full of secrets and locked rooms.
Years later, Esteban returned from a business trip earlier than expected. Upon entering, he heard something strange: a crying little girl behind the service stairs.
— Is anybody there? —he asked.
A maid appeared nervous.
– Sir, it’s nothing. He must be tired.
But Esteban didn’t believe him. He went down the dark hallway and opened a hidden door. Inside he found a little girl sitting on a small bed. She had long hair, a pale face, and she was hugging an old blanket.
—Why are you crying? —he asked softly.
The little girl looked at him with fear.
-Because today I heard they’ll send me away.
Esteban felt rage.
– Who’s sending you?
-Mrs. Beatriz – replied the girl-. Says if you see me, it’s all over.
Beatriz was Esteban’s sister.
The girl tried to hide her hand under the blanket, but he managed to see a hospital bracelet. Her heart started to beat fast. He kneeled down and read the name
“Baby Lamb — Daughter of Esteban Lamb.”. ”
Esteban stopped breathing.
—Mi hija…
The girl opened her lips, confused.
— Are you my father?
That moment Beatriz showed up at the door.
—Esteban, I can explain.
He stood up slowly, with his bracelet in his hand.
—You made me bury an empty box.
The little girl cried, not realizing that she had just destroyed the family’s cruelest lie.
The mansion kept a secret for years… until the cry of a girl and an old bracelet revealed the truth.
