49ers defensive guru Robert Saleh: 'Peaceful giant' who preaches violence

The calm before the storm might be over in Santa Clara. The San Francisco 49ers began their Week 8 practices with clouds gathering — not over Levi’s Stadium, but over their injury report.

Once again, the list was long. Ricky Pearsall remains sidelined with a PCL injury, while Bryce Huff, Jake Brendel, and Yetur Gross-Matos were also held out due to hamstring issues. None are expected to play against the Houston Texans this Sunday.

But the headline isn’t about who’s staying out. It’s about who just joined them. Star cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, the quiet anchor of San Francisco’s secondary, popped up on the report with a quadriceps injury — one that coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t even mention earlier this week.

“Serious enough for him not to go today,” Shanahan said. “I’m not sure about tomorrow, but I hope he can go.” It’s the kind of uncertain tone that sends shivers through the fanbase.

“WHEN ONE BRICK IN THE WALL SHAKES, THE WHOLE HOUSE HOLDS ITS BREATH.”

Lenoir has quietly built a Pro Bowl-caliber season, locking down receivers with elite precision. According to Next Gen Stats, he’s been targeted on just 10.6% of coverage snaps — fourth-lowest among NFL corners — and allows only 4.5 yards per target, also top-four in the league.

His absence would sting deeply. Without him, the 49ers will likely turn to Darrell Luter Jr., who filled in admirably against the Falcons when Renardo Green exited with a toe injury. Still, losing Lenoir against Houston’s passing attack is far from ideal.

The silver lining? The Texans are also battling injuries of their own — notably, star receiver Nico Collins may miss the matchup. That could level the playing field if Lenoir can’t go.

For now, all eyes are on Friday’s practice, the pivotal day that will decide whether San Francisco’s iron wall stays intact or begins to bend. In a season where every snap counts, one quad strain could shift the entire Week 8 narrative.

Because in Santa Clara, storms don’t always come from the sky — sometimes, they come from the injury report.
