The New England Patriots have been the frontrunners in the A.J. Brown trade sweepstakes for much of the offseason, but recent developments have introduced fresh uncertainty into the situation.
What began as a quiet rumor has evolved into one of the most prominent storylines of the NFL offseason. Multiple insiders have pointed toward a potential trade of the Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver to New England after June 1. However, reports in the past week suggest the Eagles remain open to offers from other teams, and the Patriots are far from a guaranteed destination — even as Brown is still widely expected to be moved.
Despite the shifting reports, one prominent voice is holding firm. Adam Schefter reaffirmed his long-standing belief that Brown is ultimately headed to Foxborough.
“I will remain in the camp that we’ve been in for the last 6-7 weeks,” Schefter said on The Adam Schefter Podcast. “Which is that I still think [A.J. Brown] is getting traded. I still think he’s getting traded on or shortly after June 1. I still think the New England Patriots are far and away the lead contender to land A.J. Brown this offseason… These other teams have had their opportunities throughout the offseason… I still think when all is said and done that the Patriots will wind up agreeing to a deal that will land A.J. Brown in New England.”
The fit in New England makes sense on multiple levels. Brown has reportedly expressed interest in joining the Patriots, and the team clearly has a glaring need at wide receiver following recent roster changes. On the Eagles’ side, Philadelphia has signaled its intentions by acquiring Dontayvion Wicks and using a first-round draft pick on Makai Lemon. These moves suggest the organization is preparing for life without Brown.
While the Eagles may be attempting to generate leverage by keeping the market open and soliciting better offers, Schefter noted that other teams have already had their window to make competitive bids. Throughout the offseason, the Patriots have been the only franchise consistently and seriously linked to the Pro Bowl receiver.
As the calendar approaches June, all eyes remain on how this high-profile situation will resolve. If Schefter’s longstanding confidence proves accurate, New England could be on the verge of landing one of the NFL’s most dynamic playmakers — a move that would instantly reshape their offense and send shockwaves through the AFC East.
