BREAKING: Vikings Take Advantage of Bye Week: J.J. McCarthy Close to Recovery, Ready for Eagles? teptep

The Minnesota Vikings are using their bye week to regroup, recover, and prepare for what could be one of their most pivotal games of the season — and the spotlight is squarely on rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who’s reportedly close to making a full return from injury.

J.J. McCarthy's injury status still a mystery after latest Vikings update

According to team sources, McCarthy, who suffered a shoulder strain in Week 4, has made “significant progress” in his recovery and could be cleared to play when the Vikings face the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday. The young quarterback has already resumed light throwing drills and is expected to participate in team practices later this week.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an encouraging update on McCarthy’s condition during Monday’s press briefing.

“J.J.’s been attacking his rehab like a pro,” O’Connell said. “We’re really pleased with how he’s responded to treatment. The bye came at a perfect time for him — and for the entire team, honestly.”

McCarthy’s potential return couldn’t come at a better moment. The Vikings have struggled offensively since his absence, with backup Nick Mullens filling in under center but unable to replicate McCarthy’s poise and accuracy. In his first few starts before the injury, McCarthy had thrown for 896 yards, 6 touchdowns, and just 1 interception, showing flashes of the leadership that made him a first-round draft pick out of Michigan.

The Vikings’ coaching staff has been cautious with his recovery, prioritizing long-term health over rushing him back. But inside the organization, optimism is growing that McCarthy will be “ready to roll” against a tough Eagles defense.

Team physician Dr. Alan Pierce spoke briefly to local reporters about McCarthy’s progress:

“He’s ahead of schedule,” Pierce said. “We’re monitoring his range of motion and strength closely, and so far, there have been no setbacks. The decision will ultimately depend on how he feels later in the week.”

Beyond McCarthy, several other key players are also using the bye week to heal. Justin Jefferson is reportedly managing minor hamstring soreness, while Danielle Hunter is recovering from a mild ankle sprain. Both are expected to be fully available for the Eagles matchup.

For Vikings fans, McCarthy’s return symbolizes more than just a healthy player — it represents hope. Despite a rocky 2–3 start, Minnesota remains within striking distance in the NFC North, and a win over Philadelphia could reignite their playoff aspirations.

The rookie quarterback, known for his composure and competitive fire, shared a brief but telling comment with reporters outside the training facility:

“I’M FEELING GOOD — REALLY GOOD,” McCarthy said with a grin. “IT’S BEEN TOUGH WATCHING FROM THE SIDELINES, BUT I’LL BE READY WHEN MY NUMBER’S CALLED.”

If McCarthy is cleared to play, it will mark one of the most anticipated returns of the Vikings’ season. The Eagles defense, ranked top-five in sacks and turnovers, will present a massive test — but for Minnesota, having their rookie leader back could be exactly what they need to turn their season around.
