Taylor encouraged Travis not to retire in 2025
The hard blow of the defeat in Super Bowl LIX in February was devastating for the younger Kelce, so much so that he even thought about ending his career.
However, he decided to listen to those who recommended that he continue playing, one of whom was his current fiancée, Taylor Swift.
According to a source who spoke to Page Six, the NFL star and the multi-award-winning singer “definitely discussed” his possible retirement “as a couple.” In addition, it was revealed that she played a key role in Travis’ decision not to leave the Chiefs or the sport: “She didn’t want Travis to retire,” the source said. “She wanted him to go out on a high note.”
Ultimately, Travis decided to follow his future wife’s advice and complete his contract with the team. However, this agreement expires at the end of the season, so retirement could be a viable option for Kelce.
This is the tight end’s 13th season in the league and on the team. He leads in receptions (67) and receiving yards (797) and has five touchdowns this year. However, none of this was enough for the Chiefs to emerge victorious.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ recent tough defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers (13-16) not only dropped Andy Reid’s team to a 6-8 record, but also marked their third consecutive loss and eliminated them from playoff contention, something that had not happened since 2014.
Adding to this was the rupture of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the final two minutes of the game, ending his season. “I’d rather keep the focus on this team right now,” Travis told reporters when asked about his retirement on Friday, stating that he would consider it in the offseason.
Kelce and the Chiefs will travel to Nissan Stadium this Sunday, September 21, to face the Tennessee Titans (2-12). Their final games of the season are against the Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders.
